A Strategy of Inclusion; A Call for Donations

The renovation of the Terry Fox Athletic Facility is both a great relief for athletes and symbol of hope for the future of athletics in Eastern Ontario.  After years of band-aid repairs, the facility is now getting a complete face lift, which will include low energy and profile high illumination field lights, IOC standard jumping runways and pits, a sound system and portable four-colour scoreboard,  and last, but not least, a new Super-X performance Mondo 400 metre track.  If there is such a thing as track and field heaven in Canada, it exists in Ottawa at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility. Canadian sprinting has come a long way in the last 40 years.  In the 1950’s, the 60’s and early ‘70s ‘to sprint’ meant ‘to run a short distance’.  That all changed in late 1972 with the arrival of Gerard Mach, who assumed the job of Canadian national coach in the sprints, hurdles and relays.  In a few short years, ‘to sprint’ took on a new meaning and that meaning was ‘to run extremely fast’.
