Athletics Canada and Royal Canadian Legion announce changes to 2010 National Youth Championships
Wednesday, May 12, 2010
OTTAWA – Athletics Canada published today the standards for the 2010 Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track & Field Championships taking place in Ottawa August 6-8 at the newly renovated Terry Fox Athletic Facility. Athletics Canada is also communicating the technical modification to these Championships as part of this announcement.
The Royal Canadian Youth Track & Field Championships will now feature an Open Championship in the Under-16 (U16) category. The creation of the Open U16 category will also engage modifications to the event format in order to meet and align with Athletics Canada’s new Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model respective to that age category. Adding the Open U16 category will now make the Youth Track & Field Championships Athletics Canada’s largest event with over 1000 athletes expected to participate. The following is an overview of some of the modifications to these championships:
The event has been extended to a 3-day competition
All events in the U16 category have been modified to meet Athletics Canada’s new LTAD model
Entries to all field events via the open process are limited to a maximum of 18 athletes. If the Championship registration exceeds 18 in any field event, the best 18 ranked athletes (with valid performances) will be accepted.
Entries to combined events via the open process are limited to a maximum field size of 10 athletes (plus Legion Branch Entries). If the Championship registration exceeds 10, the best 10 ranked athletes (with valid performances) will be accepted.
All U16 athletes are required to compete in their own age classification and may not move up to compete in the U18 category in any or all individual events. This rule does not apply to relay events.
